MOSAIC Moments: Hanging Out the Wash

One of life’s little pleasures: Hanging out laundry to dry. When moving to long term care, it is often something forgotten. Azura Memory Care of Monroe-clothes line 2Monroe brought back this ritual and understands the importance of getting outside.

It is familiar to nearly everyone. It is sign that someone is home and that someone cares about the values of thrift, work and looking after others. It is fun to hear the stories about our residents’ wringer washer and first dryer. And, there’s something rather soothing about line-dried clothes. Some enjoy the conversation that happens when hanging it up together and reminiscing about children that once helped. Others simply like being outside and feeling the warmth of the sun. Or maybe it is watching and hearing it flap in the breeze and shine whitely in the sun’s reflection.   And, even a small few, like the exercise. Hands down, everyone agreed that the absolute best reason to hang the wash outside was the fresh smell of sheets coming off the line.

So many MOSAIC Moments from such a simple task. Kudos Azura Memory Care of Monroe for engaging our residents and bringing back one of life’s simple pleasures.

Marion had long poles to hold the lines up, so the clothes, wouldn’t drag on the ground . She showed me how to hang a blouse up, so you wouldn’t have to iron the blouse.
On Chambers street, we hung in the yard in warm weather, and the clothes would fill the whole yard. I beleive we only washed on Mondays, but because of 4 families, we did have to take turns. In the winter we hung in the basement, were the 4 furnases dried the clothes in no time.
We had 2 tubs, with one with blueing in, to whitten the sheets, and the sheets were white, no colored ones. I caught my hair in the wringer once, but was able to pull it out, probally, a frew hairs missing.
Now adays, very few people hang wash outside, and it is done, on anyday of the week.I still love to hang wash outside, marion also hung out. Bernice (Marion’s sister)
