Memory Light & Candle Vigil for Alzheimer’s

During the month of November, Azura Memory Care honored those touched by Alzheimer’s disease and memory loss by creating a purple glow outside of our locations at Eau Claire, Janesville, Kenosha, Manitowoc, Sheboygan and Wausau. We wanted to shine a light on the need for more education and a cure for Alzheimer’s disease.   The purple Memory Lights were lit each night in November and the public was invited to view the displays in an effort to raise awareness.

In addition, a Candlelight Vigil was held to honor, cherish and remember those affected by Alzheimer’s disease. Please visit (and Like) our Facebook page to view pictures of these events.  Candles or lights were also sold to the public as a fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association.  Azura Memory Care is proud to announce that we not only raised over $1800 but even more importantly provided peace and closure for many that attended the Vigil.  Heartwarming poetry was read and family members spoke including Ann, whose mother lives at Azura Memory Care of Manitowoc.  Her words~

I have two gifts here.  One is wrapped in colorful paper and topped with a shiny, eye-catching bow.  The other has plain newspaper for its wrapping.  Which gift would be the one you’d choose?  It would be natural to reach for the fancy package first, right?  Perhaps the attractive gift is only an empty box; maybe the plain gift holds the priceless, diamond necklace.

People are like gifts.  They come into our lives all wrapped differently.  Each human being is unique with a different personality and abilities.  Every person has a story, a history of family and friends who helped shape them.  Sometimes, along the way, the wrapping paper of our lives gets torn or ragged.  But, that doesn’t change who we are on the inside.

Each resident at Azura is a GIFT.  As a caretaker, it is our privilege to unwrap the outside and rediscover the wonderful person under the wrapping paper.  Each day is an adventure because sometimes we have to dig through a lot of tissue paper to locate the real gift.  And sometimes the gift might be broken; and so we attempt to fix it as best as we can.

Personally, I have gained so many friends here at Azura because each resident, their family and all of the staff have become a part of my extended family.  I’ve come to realize that each person is so very precious because they have a spark of God inside of them.  I am in awe of the patience, courage, dedication, skill, respect, compassion, tenderness and love that manifests itself daily in these walls.  My life has become enriched because of the time I spend here with my own sweet mom and all of you!

One of my heroes in life, in addition to my mom, dad and Ron, is Mother Teresa of Calcutta.  She wrote a short poem that encourages us to embrace life.  I want to share it.

“Life is an opportunity, benefit from it.
Life is beauty, admire it.
Life is a dream, realize it.
Life is a challenge, meet it.
Life is a duty, complete it.
Life is a game, play it.
Life is a promise, fulfill it.
Life is sorrow, overcome it.
Life is a song, sing it.
Life is a struggle, accept it.
Life is a tragedy, confront it.
Life is an adventure, dare it.
Life is luck, make it.
Life is too precious, do not destroy it.
Life is life, fight for it.”
